CHASING CLIVE--FROM CDNOW TO CHELLO--THE RETURN OF CLIVE MAYHEW BEGG |
|
When the producers of the Music & Entertainment Media Online (MEMO)
Conference procured the International Vice President of CDNOW--Clive
Mayhew-Begg--as keynote speaker for the e-tailing side of the two day
event August 18-19, they knew they had a crowd magnet since he had
been so controversial the year before. But when Clive left the global
music online seller a month ago, the producers thought they'd lost a
major draw--until Clive resurfaced as a Senior Vice President with Chello
Broadband and vowed to return to once again rattle the cage of the
Australian music industry.
Mayhew-Begg brings with him a wealth of knowledge from setting up international markets for the beleaguered CDNOW when based in the US and London. Last year, he told how CDNOW had deep pockets and would become the dominant etailer of music in the Australian market when it set up operations here, as it had in the UK a short time ago. But his predictions fell flat as CDNOW fought to find new investment, closed its UK operation and decided against expanding into Australia and Asia. CDNOW announced its purchase this week by German media group Bertelsmann, owner of BMG Records. He exited the company in late May before the sale and became the Senior Vice President, head of the Commercial Group for Chello Interactive Services division, based in London. Chello Interactive Services division is the interactive division of the Chello Broadband--one of the world's leading broadband Internet companies, commercially active in nine countries on three continents. In Europe, New Zealand and Chile the broadband distribution is via cable; in Australia it is via MMDS (wireless) and satellite. But Clive will be bringing his unique perspective on the state of Internet music retail, new developments in delivering digital music direct to consumers without physical stores, the future of the music industry and its current multinational players as well as how broadband delivery technologies will create new opportunities for artists & labels. MEMO producer Phil Tripp is happy to have Clive back with his roster of 40 international and Australian speakers. "Clive's a colourful character, an inspiring speaker with an incredible knowledge to impart, having come from the Australian IT industry where he was the Managing Director of Netscape before being poached by CD NOW. He subscribes to the theory, 'The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.' We knew his controversial style and substance of experience would make waves!" CDNOW had notified Tripp that Mayhew-Begg would not be speaking and that they could not offer a replacement ketnote speaker. CDNOW had taken a sub-sponsorship of the MEMO Conference whose main sponsor is Apple Computer Australia. Tripp had then tried to find a suitable replacement and was on the verge of announcing one when Mayhew-Begg popped up again and agreed to come to Australia to stir the MEMO pot. His speech precedes a stellar panel of the leading music Internet etailers and 'bricks 'n' mortar retail store execs with online presences. Sitting on the 90 minute "Bricks vs Clicks; Etail vs Retail; B2C vs B2B" panel are HMV Records Commercial Director Martin Carr, Director of Content for Sanity.com Ken Outch, ChaosMusic VP Sales & Marketing Victoria Doidge, Matthew Darby CEO of CD Star and Lou Schillaci CEO of Noizenet Online Music & Entertainment Hub. It's the most powerful assembly of online music retailers ever assembled and the start to four panels that day on the future of music. Other speakers will be announced shortly but new Artist Panel participants include David Bridie of My Friend the Chocolate Cake and Not Drowning Waving plus James Roche of Bachelor Girl--both of whom have been active in their own Internet sites. A full schedule of speakers, the eight panels over two days, topics and further info is found at Music & Entertainment Media Online site http://www.immedia.com.au/memo.
